Psalms 36:7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
I recently watched a group of boys playing “trust fall” off a dock into the pond at camp. One boy would fall back and completely trust his friends would catch him above the surface of the water. He wasn’t supposed to get wet. After observing for a few minutes, there were absolutely no trustworthy friendships among these boys. With the water so enticing on a hot summer day, I don’t think there were any hard feelings that everyone got soaked.
As I watched I thought about “trust.” Trust is a firm belief in the ability or reliability of someone or something. If you think about it, we trust people and things many times every day. One could argue, being trusting is part of the human DNA. However, as sin tightens is grip on society, it is breaking down the components of trust that humans have in each other and sometimes in God.
The truth is that trust is oftentimes one-sided. In the game I watched, only the “falling” boy was trusting his friends. His “catchers” could do as they pleased. This can be scary for us, to relax and let go and let the outcome be whatever it is going to be.
God wants us to trust. We need to be able to trust each other and, no doubt, Him. If someone is consistent, they will certainly be more trustworthy, and God is definitely consistent. In our scripture above, the psalmist states men put their trust in God’s shadow (or protection) because of His lovingkindness towards us.
Has God not shown us consistency in His love towards us? He sent His only Son to die for us. What greater love is there than that! While we were still sinners, Jesus died for us! He knows our strengths and weaknesses and continues to reach out to us. When we are discouraged, He sends encouragement. When we need a spiritual boost, He sends the Holy Spirit. This is God’s love towards mankind. Spend a moment and think of all the ways God has consistently shown His lovingkindness to you.
As we move forward in a wavering and unsettled world, remember, God can be trusted. Despite all that happens in life, believe in the ability and reliability of Jehovah, our Creator, to place you in the shadow of His wings. He cares for you.
