The flower in the above picture really caught my attention while traveling. Here was this lone flower thriving in the midst of what was otherwise a desolate environment. It seemed so out of place; like it just didn’t belong there. It is so reminiscent of the phrase, “being in the world, but not of the world.”
As Christians, we have to live in this world (where else could we go?), but we don’t have to be of this world. In other words, we don’t have to adopt the world’s attitudes and philosophies, its fashions, music, or ideas of ‘fun’. We don’t have to worship the things or the people the world worships.
The Bible tells us, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2 NKJV) We’ve been called to hold God’s standard, not to conform to the standards of this world. When we keep Jesus’ standards, we will be set apart and stand out for Him. We are called to stand out from this world. We are called to stand out for Jesus Christ.
What a tall order! Jesus tells us to be different from this world. He says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 NKJV)
Philippians 2:15 says, “That you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world…” (NKJV)
If we desire to wins souls, we need to be different from this world. People need to see something in us they’ve never seen before! They need to see Jesus living within us! Let us endeavor to shine for Jesus and not be afraid to stand out for Him, even if it means we have to risk being out of place. It just might cause someone to ask why we are different and what they need to do to have salvation.
Oh, Lord! Help me to stand out for you and be different from this world! Help others to see you living in me. Help me to be able to point others to you!
