The phrase “One Nation Under God” generates a lot of discussion and controversy nowadays in our country. Some people feel the phrase should be removed from our Pledge of Allegiance because it was not part of the original text. Others feel it should be removed because it doesn’t reflect their personal beliefs. Perhaps some may even feel we haven’t really been living like a nation that is truly under God.
Nevertheless, there will be ONE nation under God. The Lord’s will is to have one nation – a holy nation, comprised of believers from every time period and from every nation all over the face of the earth. The universal church will be that one nation under God for all eternity.
1 Peter 2:9-10 says in the New Living Translation,
“…for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession… Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people…”
Just imagine! Christians from North and South America, from Europe and Asia, from Africa and Australia, from tribes, peoples and nations of long ago – they will all have one identity as God’s holy people that make up His holy nation.
I have to wonder – will we all speak one common language or retain our own languages in heaven? It’s not clear. But one thing that is clear – we will all be praising God, “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.” (Colossians 1:13 NLT)
O, Lord! Make us Your holy people, Your holy nation! Thank you for taking us out of the far corners of the earth to make up your special people. Your nation will last forever and have no end!
“For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations.” (Psalm 145:13 NLT)
