John 15:4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, NEITHER CAN YOU, unless you abide in Me.”
One of the biggest mistakes that we can make and often do make in our Christian walks, is to think for a minute (or an extended period of time), that we are doing it on our own, through our will or ability or goodness. “Doing it” meaning, having spiritual life and producing heavenly fruit. When we do it all on our own, we actually fail completely.
When we come to the opposite conclusion, that we cannot do it on our own, not at all, certainly not in the quantity or quality that the Father is looking for (in us dwells no good thing), that is when we are really ready to begin to live the life that Jesus is looking for.
Jesus says we are just branches, we are not the vine anchored in the earth. We cannot bear heavenly fruit of ourselves. The Vine gives the life! It is Jesus Christ in us, our connection to Him that produces the good fruit in us. In the vine we are anchored, from the vine comes water and nutrients to grow the branch and fruit. It is the Vine that is anchored and perfectly stable. The moment the branch is cut off from the vine, all life in the branch ceases, all stability, all growth and all fruit. It withers and dies.
The branch is TOTALLY dependent on the vine for life and so are we TOTALLY dependent on Christ for spiritual life. “For in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
So we must choose to abide in Christ and be as connected to Him EVERY DAY AND IN EVERY WAY so that the life of God and production of heavenly fruit can result.
LORD, help us to be ever mindful and in this new year, that we be COMPLETELY dependent on you for all spiritual life and spiritual fruit. Help us to EVERY DAY and in EVERY WAY be connected to You because we are dependent on You and You alone.
